Day At Home

30/4/2014

Team Awesome got an unexpected day at home today due to a school closure. The RCMP were concerned about a suspicious package that was found at the same home that was involved in the pipe bomb incident awhile ago. To be on the safe side, the school was closed and the staff was moved to the Henry Grube Center on Schubert Dr. for the day.
As this is the second incident in a short period of time, some of the children might have concerns about how safe they are at school or even living in the neighbourhood. As these sorts of situations can bring up strong emotions, BEST will have a counsellor at the school tomorrow to help the children if needed.
We are hoping that school will resume as usual tomorrow and we will reschedule our river walk.

Egg Launch

28/4/2014

  Friday May 2, 1:00pm
All students are invited to enter this fun event on their own, with a group or with a parent. All you have to do is find a way to prevent an egg from breaking when it hits the wall at speed. Choose the materials, make your plan and have some fun.
Entry forms cost 25c and are available from your teacher.
Rules:
    1. Students may enter individually or with a partner or as a small group.
    2. Parental assistance is appreciated but not required.
    3. The raw egg will be supplied on the day. We much prefer to put our own raw egg in just before dropping it, but if your design is completely enclosed, you may put in your own raw egg.
    4. The egg must be visible. We want to see if it breaks or not.
    4. No parachutes or balloons may be added to the outside of the container
    5. The device to protect the egg must fit into a shoe box although it does not have to be in a shoe box. It cannot be larger than an average shoebox.
*New Rule for this year! Mr Hembling is an Olympic enthusiast and is introducing egg testing! If your egg survives it must undergo egg doping tests. We will be breaking your egg if it survives to determine its “leggitimacy”

Friday Housekeeping

Team Awesome may come home today with a story that I fell and hit my head... or they might not. It's hard to say sometimes what they remember as we do so much in the course of a day. I did fall and hit my head quite hard in the classroom this morning and I know it scared some of the children. Rest assured that although I have a big goose egg and a headache, I will be just fine.
  • Myles shared a Lego man.
  • The Egg Launch contest is next Friday afternoon- notices came home yesterday. Entry forms are .25. Come join the launch!
  • This Thursday, May 1, is the last BEST Family Math Night.
  • Please return May lunch forms to the office by Monday.
  • The PAC coupon book fundraiser was due to the office today. Please return the book if you do not wish to buy it.
  • Family Projects went home this week and are due Friday May 2.
  • BEST has a dress code, which will be posted soon.
  • There has been a case of pink eye in our classroom, which is contagious, so please check your child if they have eye complaints.
  • Yearbook orders are due to the office May 9 ($20.00).
  • We will have a Hug A Tree Safety presentation on Monday which covers what to do when lost in the woods.
  • In honour of Mother's Day, Team Awesome would like to host our moms (or female relative if mom can't come) for Moms and Muffins, Friday May 9th from 2:00-2:30.
Go forth and Be Awesome!

It seems odd to be posting a housekeeping notice so early in the week. You are going to love having Team Awesome at home for five days over the Easter weekend. Some of the children have told me that they are going on trips and some have company coming. And, of course, we counted down how many sleeps until Sunday.
  • Beth shared an Elsa doll, Iszaac had a handful of Lego men, Beni showed us his swim goggles and Tayja will be sharing her vacation pictures next week.
  • Tomorrow, Thursday April 17, is an NI day so the children stay home.
  • Friday April 18 to Monday April 21 is Easter weekend.
  • Tuesday April 22 is Earth Day.
  • Thursday April 24 is Family Math Night from 6:00-7:00.
  • Thursday April 24 is also our Royal Inland Hospital tour from 8:45-12:00ish. Please return permission slips as soon as possible.
  • The PAC sent out a Great Little Coupon Book this week as a fundraiser. If you wish to buy the coupon book it is $10. If you do not, please return the book to the office. All orders for more coupon books are due April 25 to the office.
Go forth and Be Awesome!

Don't forget to send 2 hard boiled in-shell eggs with your child tomorrow so we can dye them as part of our Easter activities.
