Hospital Tour

14/4/2014

Looking at the calendar this morning I realized that our hospital tour is next Thursday- and I hadn't sent home permission slips or booked a bus yet! Yikes! This short week is really throwing me off my game. So Team Awesome went home with permission slips this afternoon and they are due back by this Wednesday please. Parent helpers are needed and there will be room on the bus for anyone brave enough to join us.
The hospital offers only a limited amount of tours per year for classes and its on a first come basis. Last June I was able to book our tour for this spring and it will be my first time getting a good look around Royal Inland Hospital. The hospital sent some guidelines for myself and parents who will be joining us.
  • Please reassure children that this is only a visit.
  • Do not express your own fears in front of the children (ie fear of needles).
  • No child who has been exposed to infectious diseases such as chickenpox, or who has a contagious illness such as a cold, can participate in the tour.
  • No preschoolers or siblings are to accompany parents.
  • A snack of juice and cookies will be provided.
  • Parking is in the parkade. Try to carpool as parking is extremely limited and you must pay for it ahead of time at the pay stations on the 2nd floor. You will need to know your stall number.
  • No pictures.
  • Cell phones are to be turned off.
  • Hospital tours could be cancelled in the event of a communicable disease outbreak.
  • You will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement.
We will be leaving the school as soon as all the children have arrived (8:45ish) and should be back at school in time for lunch. Team Awesome looks forward to having you join us next Thursday!

Friday Housekeeping (on Saturday)

12/4/2014

Picture
As the days get longer and the weather gets nicer it is becoming more difficult to sit inside in front of the computer so you might notice a slight decline in blog posts. I will continue to make housekeeping posts on a regular basis however.
  • Kaden had a firetruck Transformer, Tarynne showed us a Pikachu, Jude shared an Angry Birds catapult and Nessaya had some Pokemon cards in a treasure box.
  • Thursday, April 17 is an NI Day so the children do not attend school and April 18-21 is Easter weekend.
  • Year books are now on sale. They are $15 if ordered before April 16 and $20 after. All orders due to the office by May 9.
  • Book orders went home last week and are due Tuesday April 15.
  • Family Projects are welcome any time they are finished. Completed projects will be displayed in the hallway after the children share them with the class.
  • The next Family Math Night at BEST will be held April 24 from 6-7pm.
  • Lunch forms for May will come home on Monday and are due to the office April 28.
  • Please send 2 white boiled eggs with your child this Wednesday for Easter activities.
Go forth and Be Awesome!

Family Math Night

7/4/2014

Picture
This Thursday, April 10, from 6:00-7:00, is the first of three Family Math nights at BEST. Family Math was developed by the EQUALS program of the Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California, Berkeley. Its mission was to improve mathematics teaching and learning in classrooms and schools, providing activities and methods to help students succeed in mathematics, especially female and minority students. It is interesting to note that since the 1980's in Canada, females have achieved as well or better than males in all areas of Mathematics except one - spatial relations.

Family Math focuses on parents and children learning mathematics together. It gives parents and children opportunities to develop problem solving skills and to build an understanding of mathematics with hands on materials. Students (that is parents and children alike) will learn how to think about a problem using such strategies as looking for patterns, drawing a picture, working backward, working with a partner, solving a problem by its components, solving simpler related problems or eliminating possibilities. Having a wealth of strategies allows for choices of ways to start looking at problems. We will also learn several mental math strategies and short cuts.

Many different activities will be demonstrated over the three evening sessions at eleven elementary school in School District # 73. Activities are "free standing" for the most part. That is to say, activities can be adapted for many levels and it is not necessary to have attended previous sessions in order to learn from each evening's presentation. Although some parents will attend all three sessions, there is benefit from coming out to even one of the evenings. The Family Math program is a wonderful opportunity to involve parents with their child's development of understanding in mathematics.

Friday Housekeeping

4/4/2014

I hope everyone had a lovely afternoon! The weather is supposed to climb as the week ends.
  • Jersey shared a purple unicorn, Thomas had a bouncy wall with a butterfly inside, Alysa showed us some hand sanitizer and Ally had a tiny shell, which led us to a few videos and a discussion of mollusks.
  • Please return the report card envelopes, signed.
  • Mrs. Farber's class had a case of chicken pox so keep an eye out for strange rashes.
  • Just a reminder that we are a nut aware school.
  • Monday at 9am the school will be recognizing the Day of Acknowledgement with an assembly. It is the first in what is hoped to be an annual event and will be marked by the hosting of assemblies in all district schools. The assemblies will focus on recognizing the traditional territories of the Secwepemc and Nlaka’Pamux peoples. Everyone is welcome to attend.
  • Next Thursday, April 10 is Family Math Night at BEST. More info to follow.
Go forth and Be Awesome!

Rainbow Experiment

2/4/2014

In connection with our rainbow theme, we did a quick and easy (and cool, of course) experiment this afternoon with things that most of you probably have in your home. I told Team Awesome that I would post photos with instructions so they could show you how to do it too. Have fun!!
