End of the Year

26/6/2014

PictureFirst week of school
I'm not sure how many of you still check this blog but I thought I would take the chance and write this post anyway.
Today is the day! The 'official' last day of Kindergarten. All through last week and into the beginning of this one I had hopes that Team Awesome would spend it together in our classroom and celebrate the end of Kindergarten. Celebrate all the great things we did together, the friendships we made and our personal gains both social and academic.  Celebrate how much we have grown physically and mentally.  And to say goodbye to the year and to each other.
Although the planned and much anticipated celebration did not happen, I have spent most of the day thinking about Team Awesome and what a great year we had and how ready they are to move on to grade one. I know that you will all be celebrating at home and that a lack of being together today does not diminish the great joy and pride we have for every member of Team Awesome.
Every year, it is hard to say goodbye to my class and this year is no different, although the ending to the year was unusual.  I will still see them next year and often remind them (and myself) that this leaving is not a goodbye, but a farewell.  Many of them will come back to visit and to share things with me, wave hello in the hall and chat during recess. The last day of school often sees myself, and sometimes a few of the children, in tears and I am choking up as I write this. I want to send each Team Awesome member a big hug and wish them a safe and happy summer and good luck in grade one. Saying goodbye only takes a moment, but those goodbyes are filled with so many wonderful memories.
Go forth and Be Awesome!!!

PS I have many items, as well as portfolios, that will be sent along to the children once I am able to get into our classroom and tidy things up. Unfortunately it might be September before that can happen. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

I'm sorry this post is so late. I have been trying to get it up since Thursday afternoon but the website wasn't cooperating. If you have been listening to the news you will have heard that there has been movement between BCTF and BCPSEA at the table. Yay! We will still be out of school on Monday but there is hope that we will not have seen the last of the school year yet. Keep your ears open for further news. A BIG thank you to the students and parents who have visited us on the picket line. We truly do appreciate it!
  • Jersey shared a catapult she made, Thomas had a metal man, Alysa showed us a travel hair brush and Ally had an elephant toy.
  • All books, library and Take Home books, are due back at the school. The school will be open during regular hours on Monday and you are welcome to take them to the office.
  • Thanks to all the dads, grandpas, uncles etc that were able to join us on Thursday. We loved having them visit us in our classroom!
Go forth and Be Awesome!
PS I love this time of year, when the children begin to write independently. Thought I would share some of our musings with you from the 'I Wonder' chart and 'Classroom News' board
.

Dads & Donuts

10/6/2014

Just a quick reminder, in case you missed it - Dads & Donuts will be this Thursday from 8:20-8:50ish. If Dad isn't able to make it, send grandpa, uncle, brother or someone else to spend a bit of one-on-one time with your child. We will share our special guests with any child who doesn't have one. Looking forward to seeing you bright and early Thursday!

Cultural Day

We had a great time at Cultural Day today! Mr. Bowser did an excellent job of organizing and I am thankful we got to attend. The weather was good, the presenters were good, the bannock was good. I have my fingers crossed we'll all get to attend again next year.
Oh! And I forgot to post the few pictures I have from CSI Day. Because I was teaching groups in the classroom I was unable to get pictures of all the children/ activities.
  • Aidan shared some colour changing pencils and Myles had some Lego men.
  • There is no June Family Project (in case you have been looking for it) or book orders.
  • Next Friday, June 13, is our rotating strike day so the school will be open but the teachers will not be in session in SD73.
  • Due to the strike day next Friday, Dads & Donuts will be moved to Thursday, June 12. First thing in the morning was the most popular choice so we will welcome our dads from 8:20ish to 8:50ish for juice, donuts and some one-on-one reading time. If Dad is unable to come, please send a male relative to share this special time with your child.
  • Our tentative field trips to the airport and Isobel Lake have been cancelled but some other fun activities closer to the school are being planned.
  • All library books and Take Home books need to be returned before the end of next week.
Go forth and Be Awesome!

Bits and Bites

5/6/2014

  • I haven't had many responses about the best time to host our dads next week for Dads & Donuts. Tomorrow I will be posting the time that works for the majority of our dads so there is time to make arrangements if needed. If you would like to have a say, please send me an email or check the time that works best for you on the sign beside our classroom door.
  • This year Team Awesome will be participating in the Cultural Day hosted at BEST by Mr. Don Bowser. It has traditionally been an 'intermediates only' event but due to the current political atmosphere, some schools have opted out. Bad news for them but good news for us! So most of tomorrow, Friday June 6, will be spent outside on the school field participating in First Nations activities. Please send a hat and water bottle and slather your child in sunscreen in case of hot sunny weather. You are more than welcome to join us! Opening ceremonies begin just after 9am and activities occur throughout the morning. Closing ceremonies begin about 1:00 with an anticipated end time of 1:30ish. Join us for the whole day or just part of the day. See you tomorrow!
  • Things are heating up between BCTF and BCPSEA and there is uncertainty around what is going to occur between now and the end of the school year. Listen to the news for updates and I will try to keep you posted. Please be assured that things will continue as normal as possible in our classroom so the children can enjoy their last few days of Kindergarten.
