Friday Housekeeping (on Saturday)

8/3/2014

Picture
Sorry for the late post but there were curling games calling my name and its not every day one gets to watch world class curling live. Hope you made it to some of the games this week too.
As I was pretty sure that we would be seeing the last of the snow for this winter (fingers and everything else crossed), Team Awesome spent a large part of Friday afternoon playing outside in the sunshine building forts and playing a game they made up called Crocodile Tag. It was a wonderful afternoon to be outside.
  • Nessaya shared a beautiful dream catcher, Jude had a parachute man, Iszaac showed us a Lego man's helmet and Tarynne brought a learning clock so old it brought back memories for me as I had the exact same one.
  • Report cards will come home with the children on Friday. Don't forget to sign and return the envelopes after the holiday.
  • Spring Break begins Saturday March 15 through to Sunday March 23.
  • There will be no book orders sent home for March.
  • PAC fundraiser orders are due at the office March 10.
Go forth and Be Awesome.

Last Skate

4/3/2014

Just a reminder that Thursday March 6 is our last skating trip. Please send helmets and skates in a bag for your child, unless you are meeting us at the arena. We should arrive at about 10 am. We look forward to seeing you there!

Polar Animals

3/3/2014

We have finally- despite many interruptions- finished off our polar animals unit. Our unit wound up today with an experiment and an activity. We learned that polar animals are able to stay warm in such frigid temperatures because of a thick layer of blubber. The children thought it was a silly idea that fat could keep animals warm so we put fat to the test. We slipped one hand into the 'blubber glove' made of lard
and left the other naked and then submerged both into icy water. The blubber glove won hands down- pardon the pun! It kept our fingers toasty warm while the other hand could barely stand to be in the water longer than 10 seconds. It was left on the science table for the afternoon so Team Awesome could have another go at it.
We also built our own polar habitats complete with snow dens for polar bears made of marshmallows and other polar animals we cut and glued to stand up on the paper. I love how many of them remembered the arctic is mostly water and added some with felts or paper and put the water animals close to it, as well as making sure the land animals were far away. Team Awesome did a great job showcasing all the things they learned about polar animals and their habitats today!
