Friday, June 6 we will be travelling to Paul Lake to participate in the Learn To Fish program sponsored by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC. We will leave the school at approximately 9:00 and return for the end of the day. Our plan is to have our snacks upon arrival at the lake and maybe some play time before our lesson. In previous years the presenters began our session with a lesson on fish and identifying them and knot tying with some hands-on practice. We then split into two groups and had some one-on-one lessons on how to cast a rod. The children will need to wait in line for their turn very patiently. We then each got our own rods and spent some time casting into the water and reeling them in. Adults will be required to help with this bit as the Team learns how to handle hooks and rods carefully. We are going to anticipate that our day this year will follow a similar format. Sometime in there we will also eat our lunches. At NO time will the children be allowed into the water as there will be no lifeguard.
The weather can be unpredictable so please plan accordingly and send both a jacket and a sun hat. Pre-dosing your child with bug spray and sunscreen in the morning is also a good idea. Please do not send these items with your child as they tend to overuse them and spray them everywhere, including in eyes, on food and on friends. The children seem to become voracious eaters on trips so some extra snacks or sandwiches would not be amiss and of course, a water bottle. There are washroom facilities at the park. Please join us if you are able as extra adult hands and eyes on field trips are needed for this activity. You could drive your own vehicle or there will also be some room on the bus. If you are taking your child home in your own vehicle at the end of the day, please inform us before leaving. Unfortunately, no one caught anything last time but there were plenty of fish tales to tell later! Many of you have been on the receiving end of a gift made from items found in the Treasure Centre. Or have been tasked with packing home a raggedy box with various recycled things lovingly coloured and cut and haphazardly stuck to it. The Treasure Centre is one of the best loved and most requested free choice centres in our room. Children need plenty of opportunities for creative play and creative thinking. It's important to provide children lots of time to explore materials and pursue their ideas. This includes time to think about how to plan, design, construct, experiment and revise project ideas either on their own or with others and the Treasure Centre provides that. The creativity at the Treasure Centre is the result of the children's ideas and is not directed by an adult, which fosters the children's abilities to express themselves. Creativity is the freest form of self-expression and the critical thinking skills, collaboration, communication, flexibility and creative problem-solving abilities used during this time are great for Team Awesome's development. The Treasure Centre is an example of 21st century learning at its best! Bert Edwards Primary Wheels and Walk Parade Wednesday, June 4th Afternoon
Students are invited to bring their wheels to school (or their walking feet) to join in a primary parade. Students are welcome to decorate their bikes or scooters or dress up in fun spirit wear. We are celebrating the warmer months and healthy living. This is a fun event! No awards will be given, but we will be doing a draw for some small prizes. Decorating for the event must occur at home. If students can’t find decoration items at home, there are some supplies students can take home with them to use to decorate their wheels. We will have a quick review of some important safety tips, as well as the importance of healthy living and then show off our wheels or walks on our school fields. Looking forward to this fun event! Mrs. Bowden, Ms. Farber, Mrs. Denison, Ms. Adams, Ms. Weber, Ms. Duquette, Mrs. Ernst *Please park wheels under our classroom windows by the trees/ purple playground
We love seeing team work in our learning spaces!
On Friday, May 23, Team Awesome will be attending a session at the Big Little Science Centre and then walking to Riverside Park for our snacks and play before returning to BEST. We will be leaving the school shortly after morning arrival and taking our lunches/ packs with us. At the BLSC we will be split into 2 groups with one group heading into the lab and the other using the hands-on items and then switching. When our time is finished, we will be walking back along Seymour St to 3rd Ave and straight down to Riverside Park where we will find a good spot near the playground to eat our snacks and play before returning to BEST.
