Have you heard about Earth Overshoot Day? It is the day on the calendar when humanity has used the resources that it takes the planet the full year to regenerate. Earth Overshoot Day has moved from late September in 2000 to August 2 in 2017. On August 2, 2017, we used up the amount of resources that it takes the planet a year to replenish. We used up in seven months what it will take twelve months to replace. Under a business-as-usual path, human demand on the Earth’s ecosystems is projected to exceed what nature can regenerate by about 75 percent by 2020. We must begin to make ecological limits central to our decision-making and use human ingenuity to find new ways to live well, within the Earth’s bounds.
Did you get your invite this week? Team Awesome would like to invite our moms (or other loved one if mom can't make it) to our classroom on Friday morning, May 11, from 8:30- 9:00. We would like to serve a small snack of muffins and juice and show off our burgeoning reading skills to our moms. Next Sunday is Mother's Day and we are looking forward to a bit of one-on-one time with our moms to show them how much we love them. And don't worry about tidying up afterwards- we'll take care of everything. Bert Edwards Egg Glider Fun Thursday May 31, 1:00pm
Students are invited to enter this fun event on their own, with a group or with a parent. All you have to do is build a glider that carries a raw egg. Find a way to prevent an egg from breaking while also travelling as far as possible. Choose the materials, make your plan and have some fun. Rules:
Build a beautiful, elegant and very effective egg glider that flies. There will not be prizes or measurements. We will just take pride in our achievement. Please ensure your glider has your name on it. They will be picked up at our classroom in the morning by a grade 5 student and returned to you with an egg in it at the gliding event. If you would like to join us, we will be outside watching the gliders perform at about 1:00. |
