Just a reminder that the Jump 4 Heart donation envelopes are due to the office by Friday, May 12. If for some reason you are unable to get them here this week, please send them as early as possible next week. Thank you for your generosity and support. Our Jump 4 Heart stations will take place Friday, May 19 outside on the field and you are more than welcome to join us.
Did you get your invite today? Team Awesome would like to invite our moms (or other loved one if mom can't make it) to our classroom on Thursday morning, May 11, from 8:30- 9:00. We would like to serve a small snack of muffins and juice and show off our burgeoning reading skills to our moms. Sunday is Mother's Day and we are looking forward to a bit of one-on-one time with our moms to show them how much we love them. And don't worry about tidying up afterwards- we'll take care of everything. As I was looking at the calendar and filling in dates, I was taken aback to realize that we have two months of school left this year. How did that happen? We have plenty of activities to fill up the time- field trips, assemblies, Fresh Air Fridays and, of course, our regular curriculum stacked on top. I often begin to feel a bit anxious this time of year as I think of how much more I want to share with the children. And although we will do tons of learning these last few months, I never seem to feel 'finished' (although I might feel like it by the end of June). There is always something else I would like to help Team Awesome discover or get them excited about. Of course, their formal learning has just begun and they will have plenty of other opportunities to embrace the excitement and I will start all over again with a new group in the fall so technically, we will not be finished even though this school year will soon be.
BEST was fortunate to receive a visit from the author and the illustrator of the children's book 'Dipnetting With Dad' last week. They are in high demand and we snapped them up just in time. The author, Willie Sellars, told us that he wanted to write a story that recreated how he learned to dipnet salmon with his dad and grandfather and the book does just that- describes his first time. Kevin Easthope, the illustrator of the book, talked to us about how he became an artist and walked us through the process of how he decided on the style of the illustrations for 'Dipnetting With Dad'. It was good for the students to hear how long the process took and that the words and pictures were done and redone many many times over many many months before a final product was produced. A perfect example of grit, determination and perseverance.
Yearbook sales are drawing to a close. This is your last chance to pick up a book, so if you haven't put in your order please do so ASAP in the main office ($20 paid in advance).
Mrs. Farber and myself are planning an AWESOME (!) Fresh Air Friday for sometime this spring when the river is too high to go down and explore. It will take place outside at the school and will involve gadgets and contraptions. But we need your help collecting a few things. We would like a few defunct small appliances (or big ones if you are willing to transport to and from the school) that the children can dismantle. Toasters, blenders, mixers, alarm clocks, stereos, etc. We have some tools the children can use as well to help them in their deconstruction of these items. Thanks in advance for your help.
