Meet A Machine

12/4/2015

JDRF Meet A Machine By Kamloops This Week
Date: April 18, 2015
Time: 10:00 am to 4:00 pm
Location: Kamloops Pow Wow Grounds, 200-300 Chief Alex Thomas Way, Kamloops
Admission: $10 per family/ $3 per individual

The Kamloops chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is organizing a new fundraising event called, “Meet a Machine,” which they hope will become an annual event for children, families and adults in our community. It is their plan to secure between 30 and 40 vehicles or machines that kids might be interested in looking at (fire engine, police vehicles/helicopter, Bookmobile, tractor, excavator, motorcycles, local industry machines, rock buggy, antique vehicles, etc.) They are inviting the community to come out and spend a few hours looking at the various vehicles with some ‘on hands’, enjoying food concessions, and participating in other fun activities such as face painting, bouncy castle, music, Native Dancers, etc.

This event is being organized as a Fundraiser for the Kamloops chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Their mission is to cure, better treat and prevent T1D (type 1 diabetes) through the support of research.

JDRF hopes Meet a Machine will become an annual event for children, families and adults in our community, while working in partnership with the Tkemlups te Secwepemc people.

Parent/ teacher interviews (I know!) are on Thursday of next week so it will be a 12:30 dismissal day. It has been under two months since the last one and spring break was in there, meaning we have had about five learning weeks, with a few short ones, since I saw you last. If you would like to see me next Thursday, just let me know and we will make arrangements. If you would like to see me but are unable to come on Thursday, alternate arrangements can be made. Pizza Day is also on Thursday and I will be having the children take it home with them for lunch as it is due to arrive just before home time. Please send a snack with your child that day.
  • Kahli had a ceramic whistle necklace and Logan shared a bug catcher.

Day Of Sucwentwecw

8/4/2015

Yesterday, on April 7, schools across SD 73 held assemblies and activities to honour and recognize Secwepemc and Nlaka'Pamux territory as well as other First Nations and Aboriginal groups. In Kamloops Thompson School District this is now known as the "Day of Sucwentwecw." Sucwentwecw (sook-went-wa) means to acknowledge one another. During this day a number of events, activities and assemblies were held to recognize the Secwepemc and Nlaka'Pamux Nation and to teach students and staff about the traditional aboriginal and First Nations people, their histories and the territories SD 73 now occupies. The theme for this year's Day of Sucwentwecw was 'Connecting to the Land.'
At BEST our assembly opened with the hand-drum group singing the Welcome Song. We were honoured to have Dessa Gottfriedson as a guest speaker and Sintse's dad, Lyle Thomas, told us a Creator story about Grasshopper. Mrs. Farber's class drummed and sang the Hello Song and Ms. Steffenson's class presented the Porcupine Song after Mr. Bowser told us Porcupine's story. Mr. Hummel's grade ones recited a poem and both Mr. Bowser and Mr. Hembling gave closing remarks.
The Day of Sucwentwecw is a day to celebrate and acknowledge one another and I would like to think that we at BEST do just that every day and not solely on April 7.

Hoppy Easter

4/4/2015

Unfortunately, you get a truncated version of our Easter activities. My camera battery goes from full to nothing in a few pictures and it died just as we were beginning our egg hunt. So I didn't capture the excitement and pleasure on their faces as they searched for foil covered chocolate eggs or how they helped each other and shared their extras. I was unable to take pictures of Team Awesome with sticky faces and hands covered with chalk dust as they drew on the sidewalk or played soccer on the field. I can't show you their big smiles as they swung on the swings in the sunshine or made up games on the primary playground. But I can tell you we had a wonderful day and our outside activities this afternoon was the cherry on the top. Hoppy Easter!

Long weekend? I'll take it! My two boys that live on the Island are making a quick trip up for a short visit. Unfortunately, unlike me, they don't get Monday off and will have to zip home on Sunday so it really will be a short visit. But seeing them twice in one month is unprecedented and I had already resigned myself to the fact that I wouldn't see them again until the summer so it really is going to be a wonderful Easter weekend. I hope you and your family enjoy it as much as I will.
  • Grayson showed us a Sponge Bob van, Dorian had a Leap Pad, Shaye shared her heart bracelet and Emilia loves her egg shaker.
  • Please sign and return the report card envelopes but keep the reports.
  • We began selecting Take Home books this week. Your child should be able to read some of the words in the books they choose. Please encourage them to read as much of the book independently as possible.
  • There are a number of spoons/forks hanging outside our classroom door. Please take them if they belong to you.
  • Tuesday, April 7, please send in Family Projects (kites). We also have an assembly at 10:45 on Tuesday. Feel free to attend.
  • Book orders are due Wednesday, April 8.
  • Next Friday, April 10, is Fresh Air Friday.
  • Early dismissal (12:30) on Thursday, April 16 due to parent/ teacher interviews.
  • Please consider signing up to attend our You Can count On Me session on the morning of Friday, April 24. It will address ways you can help your child with math at home and the children will take an assortment of math items home, which the PAC has donated. If you are unable to attend, uncles, aunts, grandparents, older siblings etc are welcome.
Go forth and Be Awesome!
